Rather than taking action on the irregularities mentioned by the auditor general, the Prime Minister was plodding ahead with the Delimara power station extension as if nothing had happened, the Labour Party said in a statement.

The PL said that no country, people or self-respecting politician could ignore the AG’s conclusions and those who took decisions should shoulder political responsibility.

Speaking during an interview on Favourite Channel’s programme Xpress, Dr Muscat said that the Auditor General's investigation confirmed a lack of collaboration by those interrogated and did not exclude corruption.

MAY 6 DEBATE

He said that when Parliament debates the Opposition’s motion on the power station contract on May 6, the PL would be requesting everyone to shoulder responsibility for his decisions.

The least the government could do following the debate was to publish the contract, which, according to the auditor, had at least eight irregularities.

Dr Muscat said that government MPs should use their vote in Parliament to show if they were for or against the people.

The government was saying that emissions from the BWSC plant would be lower than those by the Marsa plant – a 50 year old system. However, it was not comparing the BWSC plant to a gas-operated one.

The Finance Minister said a few days ago that bills would be cheaper with the BWSC plant, something which the auditor did not confirm.

The auditor spoke on gas and oil prices and said that according to recent rates, a gas power station would lead to cheaper prices.

During the Parliamentary debate, the PL would be taking a series of initiatives for justice to be made with the people.

It said that accountability was needed on the issue, something which distinguished the PL from the Prime Minister and his government.
