The facades of Malta’s oldest coastal tower, Wignacourt Tower, were floodlit in many colours in a ceremony to mark a €100,000 restoration project.

Built by Grand Master Wignacourt in 1610, the tower is now under the responsibility of heritage organisation Din l-Art Ħelwa.

Earlier this week, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis attended an event together with Malta Tourism Authority CEO Paul Cutajar and the St Paul’s Bay council.

Simone Mizzi, DLĦ Executive President, said the organisation was grateful that the tower, exposed as it was to the elements, “should be the beneficiary of EU funds especially because St Paul’s Bay is a beautiful area” where everyone would benefit from the new lease of life.

It was also an example of the synergy that could be achieved between a government authority and an NGO.

The funds were obtained by the tourism authority.

The tower has been the responsibility of DLĦ since 1970. It started restoration in 1975.
