An investigation into an oil spill at Pretty Bay last week is expected to be concluded soon, as the Birżebuġa beach remains closed for bathing.

“We’re waiting for the reports of the investigation as we cannot speculate, and we will then take the necessary steps,” Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said yesterday when asked whether action was being taken against those responsible for the spill.

“I expect the report to be concluded as soon as possible,” he said.

The bay was closed by the Civil Protection Department on Friday after a container carrying chemicals in the Freeport was hit by machinery on Thursday.

However, it was only late on Sunday that the Environmental Health Department issued an official statement saying the bay would remain closed pending tests.

We should learn from any shortcomings, if there were any

In the meantime, several people took to the water on Sunday as they were unaware the beach had not yet been cleared for swimming. Lifeguards and beach officials had not been informed it was still closed.

Asked whether this showed lack of coordination, Mr Mizzi said every department involved had its own role – his ministry was taking care of the investigation into the spill.

“We should learn from any shortcomings, if there were any.”

Birżebbuġa Mayor Kevin Barun confirmed that warning signs had been put up and called on anyone who suffered an inconvenience as a result of the incident to contact the council.

Last week’s incident follows an oil spill eight months ago which spread through Marsaxlokk Harbour and Birżebbuġa.

The source of the spill, however, could not be identified.
