Kyiv Post reports rebels in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine have claimed that nearly 90 per cent of voters had cast ballots in favour of independence in a disputed referendum, with 10 per cent against.

Libya Herald quotes officials in Libya say they have recovered 24 more bodies from a boat which capsized off its shores last week. It is now known that at least 40 people died in the incident and another 40 are still missing. 

Kathimerini says the Supreme Court in Greece has cleared the way for the extreme right Golden Dawn Party to contest elections to the European Parliament later this month. 

More than a sixth of candidates in the Indian elections have criminal cases pending against them, according to a think tank. Sky News quotes the Association of Democratic Reforms saying some candidates face allegations of murder, kidnapping, extortion, trafficking and rape.

Baltic Times reports Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite faces a second round run-off  after she fell short of the 50 per cent of votes needed to get re-elected in the first round. 

Israel has become the latest country to offer Nigeria help in locating schoolgirls. Haaretz says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan by phone, they were “ready to help in finding the girls and fighting the cruel terrorism”. 

More than 100 billionaires are now living in Britain – the first time the milestone has been reached. According to this year’s Sunday Times’ Rich List, 104 billionaires with a combined wealth of more than £300 billion are now based in the UK – more than triple the number from a decade ago.

L’Avenir says at least 15 football fans died of suffocation and a further 24 were in the Democratic Republic of Congo after police fired tear gas, provoking a stampede.

O Globo reports Sao Paulo's airport, one of the busiest in Latin America, has opened a new international terminal at Guarulhos, under construction since February 2012 – just in time for the football World Cup. It features a glass facade and soaring interiors inspired by Asian designs.
