Times of Malta reports how Erin Tanti told medics he had fallen off Dingli Cliff, but his rescuer had his doubts. It also quotes a respected UK presenter, Oddie, saying he was being bullied in Malta.

The Malta Independent follows up the President's absence from the canonisations ceremony, saying the President, government, 'work in mysterious ways'.

In-Nazzjon says new permanent secretaries are being appointed in a case of musical core in Labour's core.

The overseas press

The Washington Times reports the United States and its allies have imposed further sanctions on Russia in response to what they call “the country’s illegal intervention in Ukraine”.  

Moscow has voiced concern over an “unprecedented” increase in US and Nato military activity near Russian borders, amid the escalating crisis in Ukraine. Voice of Russia reports that in a phone call, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu also urged his US counterpart Chuck Hagel to “turn down the rhetoric” over Ukraine

The New York Times reports UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the Ukraine separatists’ seizure of observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, saying international missions in Ukraine must perform their duties without interference.  

al bawaba says the deadline set by the United States for a Middle East peace agreement to be reached has expired with the process now in disarray.  

The BBC reports leading lawyers from around the world have criticised the United Nations over its “over-cautious” interpretation of international law which they say “is threatening thousands of lives in Syria”.  

According to El Universal, the Mexican army has begun registering weapons carried by vigilantes in the western state of Michoacan, nearly four months after the self-defence group launched an offensive against the local drugs cartel.  

O Globo says protesters in Brazil have set fire to five buses after a police resulted in the death of a teenager. The fatal shooting of the 17-year-old boy in Rio de Janiero is the latest in the series of police-related incidents in its crackdown on Rio’s favelas.

Star Tribune says after the ferocious storms that have claimed at least 21 lives in the southern United States, a tornado tore through the Mississippi town of Tupelo killing one person and causing widespread destruction to homes and businesses.  

Daily Express says London Underground workers have walked out on a 48-hour strike in a long-running row over Tube ticket office closures. The union said the move will cost hundreds of job and threaten safety.  

Paul Simon and his wife were arrested in Connecticut over the weekend and charged with disorderly conduct following a domestic dispute
