Tourist movements were an all time record this summer, contributing to continued recovery of the economy, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said at a meeting with the FORUM group of trade unions yesterday.

He said the government was on track to reduce the deficit to below 3 per cent of GDP, in line with EU requirements.

Dr Muscat said the government was committed to stamping out precarious work and would fight abusing employer who sought to circumvent the law.

The forthcoming Budget, he said, would place particular emphasis on encouraging more women to join the workforce.

Dr Muscat agreed with points raised by FORUM president Paul Pace on the need to reform the way the public service was run and the need to review the constitutional provisions on the Public Service Commission.
