A man was rescued from the wreckage of his Mini Cooper car last night after it left the Mellieha bypass and crashed into a field a considerable distance away.

The car practically came apart with the force of impact but the man - a 23-year-old from Sliema - remained conscious and did not appear to be grievously injured, although he suffered fractures.

He was assisted by a medical team and members of the Civil Protection Department before being taken to hospital.
