The annual President’s New Year Concert will start off 2014 with a bang for music lovers.

Directed by Mro Michael Laus, conductor of Malta’s national orchestra since 1991, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a programme based around excerpts from opera, which will include international and local composers – Stephen Psaila and Charles Camilleri will be performed alongside Smetana and Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Saint Saëns.

At a time of year when we cast a retrospective look at our lives, the theme will be the passing of time.

The televised concert will also broadcast a ballet choreographed by Johane Casabene.

The concert will be held on January 5 at the Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Tickets at €5 are available from the President’s Palace, the MCC and the Manoel Theatre in Valletta, or from San Anton Palace in Attard. Ticketing offices will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. For more information, call 2123 1350 or 2122 6226.
