President George Abela this morning visited Dom MIntoff, who is still in intensive care at Mater Dei hospital.

The former prime minister and Labour leader, who is aged 94, was admitted to hospital two days ago after suffering a mild stroke. He is responding well to treatment.

Two years ago Mr Mintoff turned up unexpectedly at a public meeting held by Dr Abela as he was contesting the leadership of the Labour Party, and expressed his support for him.

The contest was however won by Joseph Muscat, who quickly repaired the party's strained relations with its former leader and welcomed him to party headquarters.

The prime minister, Dr Muscat and Archbishop Paul Cremona, have also visited Mr Mintoff at Mater Dei.
