It is essential that social dialogue and industrial relations are of utmost importance at this time of development in the country and in view of the European and Eurozone economic climate, President George Abela said.

He was speaking during a meeting with representatives of the social partners and MEUSAC and MCESD officials on the occasion of Worker’s Day.

The President said that confrontation had to be avoided and solutions based on understanding between all partners, including the government, had to be sought for a compromise to be found, rather than intransigence.

This would ensure economic development, safeguard existing jobs, help in the creation of new ones and spread social justice.

The President insisted that Maltese workers should have suitable conditions of work including an adequate pay. He said suitable attention should be given to precarious employment, which should be defined. This phenomenon should be faced and a fair solution to the problem found.
