The President's attendance for the Libya's 40th anniversary celebrations was important as it renewed the friendship between the Maltese and the Libyans, President George Abela said on his arrival.

He said that he met Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in an official manner and he extended the greetings of the Maltese people.

Dr Abela was accompanied by Foreign Minister Tonio Borg.

Durign their visit they met Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and discussed how Malta and Pakistan could create employment opportunities in countries such as Libya for Maltese and Pakistani entrepreneurs.

Yesterday they visited the convent of the Franciscan nuns where Maltese nuns work with orphans. Mass was said by Nuncio Tommaso Caputa, who was representing the Catholic Church in Libya. Dr Abela also met Renato Martino, Libya's representaitve for the celebrations.

Dr Abela and Dr Borg visited Palm City to meet the Maltese workers on the project. They also met the Maltese workers at the Corinthia Bab Africa.

This morning, Dr and Mrs Abela left Malta for a holiday in Italy. They will be back on Monday. Anton Tabone is acting President.
