President George Abela received the Cabinet, the Archbishop and the Bishop of Gozo in separate courtesy calls this morning.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that the meeting was a sign of respect and also a signal that the Cabinet would be working hand in hand with the President for the good of the country.

Dr Abela thanked the Prime Minister for having shown confidence in him when he nominated him for the presidency, with the backing of the Cabinet.

He said every member of the Cabinet was an important link in the chain of government.

While there could occasionally be disagreements in the country, one needed to move away from the partisan mentality in the interests of the people.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Jose' Manuel Barroso was among those who have sent congratulatory messages to Dr Abela.

Mr Barroso said he was confident that under Dr Abela's presidency, Malta would further enhance its contribution to the EU's priorities and values.

"I am in no doubt that you shall be an inspirational force for the Maltese people to help impliment the common solutions that we are all keen to deliver together as committed Europeans, in the face of current and future global challenges."
