President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca highlighted the importance of civil society in discussions on migration, during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres today.

The two, who met at the President’s Palace as the Valletta Summit was drawing to an end, described the conference as a positive one as it had brought European and African governments around the same table.

They agreed that such discussions should not be a one off, but part of a continuous process through which European and African governments meet more often, President Coleiro Preca said.

The two also discussed the President's proposal to set up the Institute for Peace and Welfare of Society in a bid to increase awareness about diversity and inclusion.

Ms Coleiro Preca spoke on the need of community initiatives for better awareness of migration realities in a bid to alleviate tension and anxiety.
