President George Abela is recovering at San Anton Palace after being discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon.

Dr Abela will continue to receive medical treatment for a back injury for another four weeks, the President's office said. He also needs to rest.

The President was injured on April 30 when he slipped in his hotel during an official visit to China, suffering a hairline fracture to his back.

After a weekend at Shanghai's Ruijin Hospital, Dr Abela was flown to Malta on a special medically equipped plane provided by the Chinese government.

Dr Abela and his wife, Margaret, yesterday thanked the medical team and staff at Mater Dei Hospital and those who had wished the President a speedy recovery.
