President George Abela has accepted a recommendation by the Prime Minister to dissolve Parliament on January 7 for a general election to be held on March 9.

In a statement, the Office of the President said Dr Abela received the Prime Minister for a 45-minute meeting this morning.

"The President, in accordance with his own deliberate judgment in accordance with Article 85(1)(a) of the Constitution of Malta, after considering that the Government of Malta cannot be carried out without a dissolution of Parliament and that a dissolution would be in the interests of Malta in accordance with Article 76(5)(c) of the Constitution of Malta, accepted to dissolve Parliament on the 7th January, 2013," the Office said.

"The President of Malta, before arriving at his decision, held meetings with the Speaker of Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Electoral Commissioner."
