Heritage, patrimony and historical significance are not limited to old buildings and other artefacts. Names also have important significance.

Such a name is The Lyceum with its origin in 1592, consolidated in 1727 and properly established in 1883. Therefore an equitable solution must be found to preserve this prestigious name. If the powers that be insist on the centralised system, an alternative would be to name the "sixth form" or the "junior college" as The Lyceum (without any additional names). It is admirable to name schools after saints and personalities, but the highest centre of education, preceding the University, should maintain a historical significance.

St Ġorġ Preca, as an old student of The Lyceum, would never have accepted that his school be lost into oblivion. Can at least the authorities preserve the name of The Lyceum and mark the year 2009 as the date when such a prestigious name had been entrenched for posterity?
