Habiba Hussein Omar, a pregnant 25-year-old woman from Somalia, was today given a year jail term suspended for two years after she admitted in court to trying to leave the island using false Italian travel documents.

She was arrested at the airport after officials became suspicious as she was handed her boarding pass.

Defence counsel told the court that the woman had been trying to leave Malta in search for a better life. He also pointed out that she had cooperated with the police and filed an early guilty plea. The prosecution agreed.
