Tracey Ainsley from Northumbria University was recently in Malta to launch the MSc course in information and library management. Ms Ainsley also took the opportunity to meet some of the students studying on programmes of the University, represented in Malta by Future Focus Ltd.

Technological advances mean that libraries and information services, in both public and private sectors, are changing dramatically and offer a wide range of attractive, challenging and rewarding career opportunities. This course exists because library and information professionals need to have skills and experience in information handling, IT and management, as well as strong interpersonal skills.

This course can be undertaken through distance learning with local tutorial support and in a period of around two years students will not only possess an internationally recognised qualification but even strong skills and experience to manage information efficiently and effectively. These courses are also approved by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Students can also obtain local funding to cover the costs of the programme under the Steps scheme launched recently by the Education Department.

Northumbria University has over 500 undergraduates and postgraduate courses. Many students choose it because of its reputation as one of Britain's best modern universities and for the special importance they give to provide their students with the knowledge and practical skills that employers are looking for. The recent Times league table results ranked Northumbria as the top new University for this particular subject.
