Workers have discovered what could be an archaeological site where a new Medavia hangar is being built at the Aviation Park in Safi.

Malta Industrial Parks Limited said it had notified the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority about the find. MIP contractors have now started to clear and excavate the area.

The site will then be surveyed to determine the exact nature and extent of the archaeological site, enabling the Superintendence and Mepa to direct MIP as to the best conservation process to be followed.

Malta Industrial Parks Limited thanked Medavia, Mepa and the Cultural Superintendence for their assistance in the matter and said it would update the public on the decisions taken.

All efforts are being made to ensure that this discovery will not impact on the critical timelines involved in the completion of the Aviation Park, while respecting the need to preserve the country’s heritage for generations to come.
