Last week, three teams from the Melita FC youth nursery took part in the Welsh International Super Cup held in Aberystwyth and organised by Teamtours direct.

The 76-strong Melita group was made up of 39 players, seven coaches and officials and 30 parents.

The tournament was played on 22 turf pitches. All Melita players performed admirably, showing character, fighting spirit and a determination to do well.

They played against opposition from India, China, Dubai, Wales, Ireland, England and Uganda.

In the U-9 category, Melita played four group qualifiers, winning two and drawing two.

They won their quarter-final against Edgars Youth Program (Uganda) 2-1 but lost 1-0 to Nicholas Wanderers in the semi-final.

Melita U-9 went down 4-1 to China's SB Stormtroopers in the play-off for third place. Twenty teams took part in this competition.

The U-10 section was split in two groups of five teams each.

In Group One, Melita won their first three games thus making sure of topping the standings with one game in hand.

In the Super Cup semi-final, they lost 2-0 to Jamie Shore but won the play-off for third place to partially make up for that upset.

The U-11 tournament saw the participation of 14 teams in two groups. Melita won four games but their effort was still not enough to reach the Super Cup semi-final.

Instead, Melita U-11 qualified for the Challenge Cup but lost in the final to Predergast Villa 1-0. Melita were classified sixth overall, scoring 42 goals and conceding only six.

Nine teams played in the U-12 eight-a-side competition.

Melita won all their four qualifying games to reach the semi-final against North Somerset, of the UK. The latter won the match 4-0 but Melita won the play-off for third place against India's Simla Youngs 7-0.
