The Armed Forces of Malta yesterday morning rescued a Portuguese diver caught up in rough seas off the coast of Dwejra in Gozo.

The AFM said the diver was spotted calling for help by the crew of a rescue boat that was carrying out a search in the area. An AFM helicopter was called to the area to assist in the rescue operation.

The man was administered first aid by an AFM rescue swimmer and transferred to Mġarr Harbour before being taken by ambulance to Gozo General Hospital.

Sources said the diver surfaced too quickly after encountering strong underwater currents.

However, he did not need to be placed in a decompression chamber and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
