Eighty port workers have filed a judicial protest claiming they were discriminated against as a consequence of an agreement signed last June.

The port workers filed the protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court against the Prime Minister, the Attorney General, the Ministry of Competitiveness and Communication, the chairman of the Malta Maritime Authority (MMA) and the Malta Dockers' Union.

They explained that they all fell under the Port Workers Regulations 1993. On June 30 this year, an agreement was signed by the ministry, the MMA and the union. They felt deceived by this because they were being discriminated against.

Those who, according to the right of succession of employment, took on their right (of employment) before July 1, 2007 were benefiting from a large sum of money as a consequence of the cost of living adjustment. This, however, did not apply to those who had to take on their right of employment after July 1 and thus they felt discriminated against.

Lawyer Anglu Farrugia signed the protest.
