The wife of well-known convict Alfred Bugeja, il-Porporina, was this afternoon jailed for six months suspended for two years after she was found guilty of trying to smuggle drugs into the hospital prison ward.

Helen Bugeja, 37, tried to smuggle drugs into St Michael's Ward at St Luke's Hospital in September 2005.

In her statement to the police, Ms Bugeja confirmed that she had gone to visit her husband but claimed the drugs were for her personal use.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras believed this version, saying the drugs were indeed for her use.

Ms Bugeja was found guilty of simple possession of heroin and Dihydrocodeine and of attempting to smuggle prohibited objects into prison. She was, however, cleared of possession of Diazepam and Bromazepam, medicinals used as antibiotics.
