Pope Francis held a Via Crucis or Way of the Cross service on Rio's famed Copacabana beachfront last night.

Up to a million young people turned out to see the Argentine pope, giving him another frenzied welcome.

The pope used the analogy of the suffering Jesus to ask the young people to ease the sufferings of the world.

The pontiff urged young people to change a world where food was discarded while millions go hungry.

Since his election in March, the pope has taken strong stands in defence of the environment and has several times said that financial speculation and corruption are keeping millions of people in hunger.

The pope's final event of his first visit abroad is tomorrow, when heR is due to preside at a closing Mass before returning to Rome that evening.
