Pope Francis today issued a strong appeal for the protection of the environment and the defence of the weakest members of society, leaving many hopeful after his inaugural Mass. Sarah Sheffer reports.

Addressing the crowd during his inauguration, Pope Francis appealed for everyone to respect the weakest in society.

"It means respecting each of God's creatures and respecting the environment in which we live. It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about."

Pilgrims leaving after the Mass said they had high hopes for a more humble papacy under Francis, who as a Jesuit has taken a vow of poverty.
