A cinema chain is to sell fish and chip flavoured popcorn after the "exciting" taste topped voting in a national competition.

The "quintessentially British flavour" of Chippy Fish popcorn will go on sale at Empire cinemas for a limited time over the summer after thousands of film fans voted it the taste they would most like to try.

Empire said the popcorn was "set to be a delicious twist on the staple fish and chips meal, and a perfect addition to the cinema experience".

Cinema-goers voted from a shortlist of flavours that included Sunday roast, wowee wasabi, banoffee pop and mallowcorn.

Nick Sykes, from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, who created the flavour, said: "I'm totally over the moon.

"Fish and chips has been the nation's favourite dish for hundreds of years and I'm very proud to see my flavour go on sale across the UK.

"I am ever so grateful for the public's support and all their votes."

Empire Cinemas marketing director Jon Nutton said: "We are really looking forward to finding out what our customers think of the winning popcorn.

"It's an exciting flavour that we're sure will tickle the taste buds."
