The Nationalist Party said this afternoon that political interference was weakening the efforts of the police to fight crime.

Home Affairs spokesman Jason Azzopardi referred to statistics published by criminologist Saviour Formosa which showed a 13% increase in crime over the past year.

Dr Azzopardi said the PN had been warning since May that incompetent command  and political interference were conveying a very bad signal. .

The police force was lacking strategy and seriousness and had seen hundreds of vindictive transfers and unfair promotions, while more deserving people were overlooked.

Dr Azzopardi noted that as recently as yesterday a police inspector had testified in  court that the police had not proceedings with investigations into bribery for tampered smart meters because of direct political interference.

The PN said the prime minister should stop using the police as a tool for his partisan interests. The police should serve the common good without any prejudices.
