The Polish community in Malta this morning had their Easter breakfast baskets blessed at Sta Barbara Church in Valletta.

A Polish priest officiated the ceremony.

This is one of many Easter traditions in Poland, a time of joy at the end of the Lenten observance of sacrifice and fasting.

The blessed breakfasts will be eaten tomorrow after Mass of the Resurrection.

Breakfast will be set with a white tablecloth and decorated with Pisanki Easter eggs, chicken figurines, catkins and fresh flowers. The basket carrying the blessed food will be the centrepiece.

Pisanki Easter eggs are intricately decorated with many traditional Polish symbols. They are given as gifts to family and friends.
