The policeman injured during a wedding reception in Marsascala on September 24-25 told the court how he had been beaten up and dragged on the tarmac after breaking up a fight.

Twins Peter Paul Camilleri and his brother Jesrit-Angel, 21, their father Peter, 56, cousin Carrin Camilleri, 31 and uncle Joseph Medina 46, all of Zabbar are pleading not guilty to injuring two policemen during the reception and to violently resisting police orders and swearing in public.

The incident happened during the wedding of a brother of the twins.

PC Frans Formosa, his left arm, broken during the wedding, still in plaster, told the court that he and his colleague PC Jurgen Zerafa could immediately see it was not going to be an easy wedding from the way the people were acting.

At one point, many people were smoking inside and they tried to ask them to smoke outside in the most diplomatic manner.

The wedding came to an end at 2.30 a.m. and many were drunk, there were people falling over having to sit down because they could not stand up and others were wobbling.

Mr Formosa said that he saw two women fighting outside the hall and he went to break them apart. He sent one of them one way, the other another. He then turned around and saw his colleague being hit by the five men accused of injuring him and his colleague.

PC Formosa said he pulled one of the accused off his friend and as he was doing so, he fell to the ground.

He then felt a shoe to his face but could not see whose shoe it was. People also started kicking him. Someone then helped him and together with his colleague walked away from the hall to call for help.

But someone pushed him hard from behind. He fell and was dragged on the tarmac. This was when he felt major pain in his arm.

PC Formosa said he first went to the health centre were it was thought he was suffering from muscle pain. However, he said it was not muscle pain and went to Mater Dei's Emergency Department, where he was certified to have broken his arm.

During cross examination he could not confirm who had placed the foot on his face or who had pushed him from behind.

The case continues.
