A police sergeant this morning described to the Court how the police had found the murdered  bodies of Mario Camilleri Snr and Mario Camilleri Jnr in a field at Birzebbuga on July 18.

Testifying in the compilation of evidence in the murder trial of George and Jason Galea, who stand accused of the murders, Police Sergeant Andrew St John from the CID, said he was working the night shift on July 18, when the police were informed about the two missing men.

At around 10pm, Insp. Fabian Fleri asked him to join the investigation and they drove to Birzebbuga and towards Qajjenza Bay.

They stopped at a particular area, got out of the car and walked to a field, the gate of which was open with half of it lying on the ground.

PS St John said Emanuel Farrugia, known as Leli id-Deffien, began pointing to an area under some trees where there was a strange smell and two heaps of soil.

The police approached the area and realised that it was a grave.

“I began to dig with my hands… All of a sudden a hand appeared and I stopped.”

PS St John said he recognised the bodies as those of the Camilleris. The police stayed on site until 2am.

He said that on the following day they went to the field with its owner, Alfredo Attard. He took them to a corrugated iron shed shaped like a half moon.

From there, he took out a paper bag which had a glock gun, a watch and a white mobile phone.

He pointed out to a second bag which had rubbish, a baseball cap, three spent cartridges, a bullet head and a broken gun split in two.

Mr Attard then took them to the field and he showed them where he had thrown away bones belonging to Matthew Zahra.

During the sitting, lawyers Giannella de Marco and Joe Giglio requested bail for their clients.

Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona reserved his decision for the next sitting, to be held next month.
