The Police confirmed today that the Special Assignment Group and the Mobile Squad will be merged into one unit called the Rapid Intervention Unit.

In a statement, the police said the unit's main role will be continuous patrol to prevent crime. The squad will however be trained and equipped to meet all eventualities, including the use of firearms and riot control.

A new shift has been created which, the police said, affords the policemen a longer period of rest between their duties, as well as time reserved for training.

The reform, the police said, will mean a stronger police presence in the roads and quicker response time.
