Authorities in Euro 2008 host city Klagenfurt said up to 100,000 fans descended on the city on Thursday, mainly from Croatia and Germany, creating a party atmosphere with only minor incidents.

The Croatia-Germany game had been considered a possible security risk but border checks look to have prevented known trouble-makers from reaching Austria and hooligan spotters from both Germany and Croatia monitored fans in the town.

Croatia pulled off a memorable 2-1 win over Group B favourites Germany on Thursday to move into the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.

"It was a great party atmosphere in the city. There were only a small number of incidents but nothing significant," said Wolfgang Rauchegger, police commander for the province of Carinthia.

Around 55,000 fans gathered in Klagenfurt's picturesque inner city area, while a further 32,000 watched Croatia defeat Germany 2-1 in the stadium, and another 13,000 watched in a fan zone close to a lake.

The population of Klagenfurt is around 92,000, according to official statistics.

Some 16 fans were detained for minor offences and during the day a young Croat died of likely natural causes from a pre-existing medical condition, police said.

Austrian police had detained 157 mainly German fans last Sunday in the city, when Germany beat Poland 2-0 but the mood was very different on Thursday.
