The Labour Party said today that the one-off payment to the police - revealed in The Times yesterday http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20120810/local/Police-get-pay-boost-of-1-5m-a-year.432254 - was blatant electioneering.

In a statement, shadow home affairs minister Michael Falzon said Labour had long been calling for policemen's conditions to be improved but the government had not budged until now.

He asked whether the government was still of the view that policemen were not due the overtime payment they said they were entitled for, and whether this one-off payment was in any way linked to this issue.

Dr Falzon said the PL would not be making electoral promises without proper plans  and its electoral programme would be based on realism and sustainability.

He also appealed to the members of the police force not to allow themselves to be tricked.
