A policeman was bitten by a dog and another was hit with a dog strap as they tried to arrest a German man in Marsalforn yesterday.

The dog, a Pitbull, was incited to attack the officers by the German, the police said.

The incident happened in a car park in Marsalforn.

45-year-old Stephan Paul Durward was taken to court a few hours after the incident and released on bail.

The injuries suffered by the officers were described as slight.

The Police Association condemned the incident and renewed its appeal for stiffer penalties for those convicted of assaulting the police.

It also insisted that the police should be covered by insurance.
