Nine people have this week been arrested as a result of action taken by the police against drug trafficking.

The police said that last Saturday they arrested a 47-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in Marsascala after finding cocaine packed for sale as well as cannabis and weighing scales in their apartments.

On Sunday, they arrested a 34-year-old man from Mosta. When approached by the police, the man tried to escape and threw a cocaine capsule on the ground. Following a search in his residence, the police found more cocaine, heroin, cannabis and other items related to trafficking.

The police continued with their operation in Hamrun on Monday where they observed the movements of people frequenting a particular bar.

The police found three men - a 38-year-old from Marsa and brothers aged 19 and 22 from Hamrun, in possession of cannabis.

On Wednesday, the police searched the home of a 33-year-old man after receiving information that he was involved in trafficking. Heroin in amounts showing that the drug was intended for sale, cannabis, scales, cash and several mobile phones were found.

The police also held the man’s wife, who is a Russian aged 27, and a 42-year-old man from Sliema.

The 33-year-old was arraigned in court today accused of drug trafficking and possession.

The other arrested people are expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
