The police removed 650 grams of cannabis resin from a bag shortly before a pick-up last Saturday, a court was told today.

A brief description of the operation was given during the arraignment of a Syrian man, Ahna Mohamad Nour, who was charged with possession of the drug not for his personal use.

Police Inspector Nikolai Sant explained that the police were tipped off about a pick-up. In a surveillance operation, the police found a bag with 650 grams of cannabis resin in it. They removed the drug and left an empty bag.

The officers then saw Mr Nour pick up the bag and arrested him.

The police then searched Mr Nour’s apartment in Swieqi and found items related to drug use. They also noticed there was a connecting shaft to another apartment, which was abandoned. A search revealed another 600 grams of cannabis resin in the shaft.

Inspector Sant objected to bail, saying the accused was not credible and changed his residence often.

Defence lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran said there were no eyewitnesses or witnesses in the case.

Magistrate Edwina Grima granted bail against a deposit of €3,000 and a personal guarantee of €15,000.
