Footage recorded by a security camera of a bank seems to be the only clue available to the police who are still looking for the white Peugeot van that ran over 11-year-old twin sisters in Attard on Wednesday night.

The footage allowed the police to establish that they are looking for a white Peugeot Partner but the film was not clear enough to show the van's registration number, sources said.

The accident happened when the sisters, Rebecca and Sarah Marie Falzon, had just left the Attard quarters of the Christian Doctrine Society - MUSEUM in Ħal Warda Street at about 7.45 p.m.

Their father was standing across the road as they walked over a zebra crossing when they were hit by the van. The driver drove off without stopping, the police said.

Witnesses told the police they had seen a white van and a boy provided them with a registration number which, however, resulted to be wrong, the sources said.

The police went through the footage recorded by the security cameras of two banks in the area, Bank of Valletta and Banif Bank. The footage of the second bank helped them establish the make and colour of the vehicle that could be seen driving away from the building.

After the accident, the girls were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance where Rebecca was found to be suffering from life-threatening injuries. Her sister was kept in hospital for observation.

In a comment posted at timesofmalta.com, a relative of the girls asked people to pray for them.

"Thanks for all those who wished a speedy recovery to the Attard twins. I can assure you that the children know how to cross the road and their father was waiting for them. If the driver wasn't speeding up, the impact wouldn't be so hard. Please continue praying," Rita Falzon wrote.

Anyone having information about the accident can call the police anonymously on freephone number 119.
