The police are investigating a theft from the court-seized Casino di Venezia in Vittoriosa.

The break-in was discovered at around 5pm yesterday when the person responsible for the place realised that items had been stolen.

Police sources said the stolen items included copper wire and copper ashtrays as well as coins and cigarettes from a vending machine.

The Casino di Venezia has been closed since 2010 shortly after a six-figure sum was stolen during a daring hold-up that remains unsolved. The casino was seized by the court as evidence and is currently under its authority.

Sources said a magisterial inquiry has been appointed into the theft.
