A 27-year-old Polish man died early yesterday afternoon while diving in Ċirkewwa.
The police said the man was given first aid by people in the vicinity until a medical team arrived on site. He was rushed to hospital, where he was certified dead at about 12.45pm.
The police are still investigating to establish what led to the man’s death.
According to divers, sea conditions at Ċirkewwa at the time of the incident were near perfect, suggesting that environmental causes were unlikely. Duty Magistrate Aaron Bugeja was informed about the case and appointed several experts to assist him.

Ċirkewwa is one of Malta’s most popular dive sites, with a number of popular wrecks and natural features. The site attracts a large proportion of the thousands of tourists who visit Malta for diving every year.
Earlier this year, a 61-year-old British woman died while diving off Dwejra and a 36-year-old Maltese diver lost his life while carrying out repair works at the Palumbo shipyards.
Three foreign divers – two men and a woman – were rescued last month after they were dragged out to sea by strong currents close to the Blue Grotto.
An Austrian and two British divers died on the same day in Gozo last June.
