Almost €3 million in traffic contravention fines were handed out by the police and Malta Transport officials in the first six months of this year, according to statistics seen by The Times.

The amount does not include fines issued by wardens employed by local councils.

St Julians and Sliema topped the list in terms of the total value of fines issued between January and June, with €340,000 and €219,000 respectively. Other localities, such as Floriana, Gżira, Paola, Qormi, St Paul’s Bay and Valletta, also saw a lot of fines being issued, all exceeding €115,000 in value.

The tranquil Gozitan villages of Għasri and San Lawrenz were at the other end of the scale: €70 worth of fines were handed out in Għasri over the six-month period and San Lawrenz had slightly more at €93. In these villages, as well as in Kerċem, certain months actually saw a complete absence of fines.

Traffic police and MT inspectors issued an average of €475,000 worth of fines every month. The amount peaked in February when the total value rose to nearly €508,000.
