A construction worker this afternoon was charged with the theft of €3,950 from a betting shop in Triq Ix-Xatt in Msida.

Serbian Dejan Lijeskic, 39, denied all charges but was remanded in custody as he did not request bail.

The theft was carried out this morning at around 5am when the shop was closed. Sources said that man gained access from an adjacent property which he broke into using a stolen ladder.

However, the police were immediately alerted as the alarm went off. The accused was arrested at a construction site in Triq Testaferrata, Gżira where he was found hiding.

Lawyer Benjamin Valenza was legal aid while police inspectors Saviour Baldacchino and Mark Mercieca prosecuted. Magistrate Francesco Depasquale presided the arraignment.
