The Malta Police Association has welcomed the news that discussions on overtime arrears owed to police officers will start this year.

The contentious issue dates to the 1990s, when police officers claimed they were not paid €56 million due them. Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said last Sunday talks on the issue would start this year. The Labour Party had made an electoral pledge to resolve the matter.

The Malta Police Association represents 65 per cent of officers. It has been waiting for the force to recognise it as the sole union representing police officers. Other officers are members of the Police Officers’ Union, an affiliate of the General Workers’ Union.
