Acting Police Commissioner Ray Zammit had his first public engagement this morning in his new role when he attended a mass in remembrance of police officers who passed away.

The mass at the Addolorata Cemetery chapel formed part of the police force’s 200th anniversary celebrations and was attended by Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia.

Neither Mr Zammit nor Dr Mallia wanted to comment after the ceremony pending a statement the minister is expected to make in Parliament on Wednesday on recent changes to the force.

Former police commissioner Peter Paul Zammit stepped down last week just over a year into his appointment and was replaced by the veteran former assistant commissioner.

After the mass a minute’s silence was observed on the police grave and commemorative wreaths were laid.

The event was attended by the police force’s top brass, recruits and family members of dead police officers.
