The police enrollment system should be revised and updated, the Malta Police Association said this morning.

Working in the corps comes with its own particularities, and no existing course currently serves the police's criteria, the association said in a statement.

The police academy should therefore be changed into a professional and autonomous and accredited institute where training is given by professionals.

The academy should have the competence to tailor courses for police to enable them to offer the services required of them in today's society.

For this to happen, the police academy should have a director of studies and an academic board specifically assigned to it. Such a course should have academic and practical training which would entice police to continue studying, the MPA said.

This would also mean that the police corps would not have absolute control over who should be promoted since it would be the academy which decides who has the necessary requisites.
