The Malta Police Association has deplored an attack by a Somali man on a police inspector yesterday.
It said violent incidents against members of the force were on the increase with police work seeing the biggest number of occupational incidents. To make matters works, no insurance covered police work.
The MPA said it had been requesting stiffer fines for people found guilty of injuring policemen for years but it was still waiting. It again encouraged the authorities to take immediate steps to increase fines for this to serve as a deterrent. Work should also start for the police to get suitable insurance cover.
The association expected the fine given in such crimes to reflect the gravity of the case. Policemen who daily risked their life at the place of work should be suitably protected, it insisted.
