This year’s MADC pantomime moves away from the usual stories put on over the past years, in which fairy tales and Disney films provided the bulk of the inspiration and storylines.

Scrooge – A Christmas Panto, directed by Nanette Brimmer and scripted by Alan Montanaro, is based on Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol, one of the greatest Christmas stories of all time, and promises a bellyful of laughter, mirth and fun.

Mr Montanaro once again takes on the role of the hilarious Dame while Colin Willis plays the crotchety Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Anything is fair game when it comes to poking fun and satirising – politicians, austerity measures, power cuts, the Maltese and the idiosyncrasies of one’s culture, politicians, Eurovision song contests, the World Cup, Qormi undertakers and... have politicians already been mentioned?

Spectacle is provided by an all-singing, all-dancing chorus pulsating with energy (choreographed by Felix Busuttil with Paul Abela as musical director), various impressive set designs by Oscar-nominee Peter Howitt, as well as suitably flamboyant costumes (particularly so when one considers this is supposed to be Victorian England!) by Ernest Camilleri.

Scrooge – A Christmas Panto is currently on at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali until January 9, excluding New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
