The Nationalist Party has erected goalposts and basketball nets right in front of the Renzo Piano parliament building in City Gate.

The structures are temporary, for use in sports events this evening as part of the party's Independence celebrations.

The PN had already been criticised over the past few days for having set up kiosks, tables and chairs at de Valette Square, for the same purpose.

There was harsh criticism a few months ago when a kiosk was set up at de Valletta square for Carnival.

In a reaction the Nationalist Party said: "We have developed a concept whereby we have brought the inside of our homes outside, with properly organized spaces, decorations, lounging areas, a library, and an environment which appeals to all those who attend the organised events.

"Also, in response to an overwhelming desire to bring something new to this year’s celebrations we looked no further than a stone’s throw away from the traditional Granaries in Floriana to the gem in the crown of a long series of achievements of Nationalist governments over the years – the Piano project, in a place restored to the glory it deserves, our capital city Valletta.

"The outstanding differences from previous years reflect the continuous changes, the dynamics and achievements within the party."

Meanwhile, Justice and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici in a tweet said: "You are free to decide whether some quarters in the local political field should practice more what they preach!"
