The counting process in the Nationalist Party’s elections to elect its two deputy leaders is now underway.

The votes cast are currently being sorted before the actual counting can start.

A total 894 of the party’s 912 councillors were eligible to vote with 887 casting their vote.

Counting for the election of both deputy leaders and the president is being done concurrently.

This is the first time that the party will be having two deputy leaders - one for parliamentary, the other for party affairs. This was made possible following a change in statute a few days ago. To be elected contestants have to obtain two thirds of the votes cast.

Mario de Marco is uncontested for the post of deputy leader for Parliamentary Affairs, while the post for deputy leader for party affairs is being contested by Beppe Fenech Adami and Claudette Buttigieg.

The councillors today also voted to elect the party’s president, a post that is being contested by incumbent Paula Mifsud Bonnici and Louis Bonnici and the 13 members of the executive.
