The Nationalist Party was attacking a €200 million investment in the Gozo General and St Luke’s hospitals, the Health Ministry said yesterday.

In a statement the ministry said the PN was trying to scare away foreign direct investment in the country’s healthcare system which would improve people’s lives and create jobs.

It was referring to a story in the PN’s Sunday newspaper, Il-Mument, which yesterday reported that the same foreign company which had bought the two hospitals had a direct link with a company in the British Virgin Islands, a jurisdiction known for money laundering and tax evasion.

The British Virgin Islands have been cast in the national spotlight after it was revealed that the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Keith Schembri had a company there. Mr Schembri, along with Health and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, have been the subject of public scrutiny following revelations they had both acquired companies in infamous tax haven Panama.

The ministry, however, insisted this latest story was unfounded.

“This latest attack is a clear indication that a possible future PN administration would be a threat to investment and further economic growth,” the ministry said.
