The Nationalist Party will be holding a sports conference as a step towards the party creating a national policy on the subject.

The conference, with the theme of ‘strengthening a culture of sport in the country’, will take place between July 1 and 3 at the PN headquarters in Pieta.

Announcing the conference this morning, PN whip David Agius said the event would mark the beginning of a consultation process on proposals for the sport sector, which the party would continue to work on in the coming months.

Among the workshops and seminars that will take place over the three days, the party will be discussing the commercialisation of sports facilities, the subject of a recent government white paper.

Mr Agius said he had met with parliamentary secretary Chris Agius and put forward certain proposals for changes to the white paper, which were now being considered internally.

The PN conference will also feature an exhibition of sporting memorabilia, and a recognition ceremony aimed at those working behind the scenes of sporting endeavours.

Carol Walsh, a member of the organising team, said: “The aim is to acknowledge the dedication of coaches, administrators, volunteers, officials and others who, over the years, have contribution to the organisation, progress and promotion of sport, but who do not qualify for the SportMalta awards.”

Clubs and federations have been invited to nominate any individuals (active in sport for at least five years) whom they feel would be suitable for the honour.
